Why Do Elephants Have Big Ears?

Why do elephants have big ears? When humans are hot, we sweat. Elephants, however, cannot sweat like we do. So how do they regulate their body temperature? Elephants are huge, which means they produce a lot of body heat. Since elephants also typically live in very hot climates, it's essential that they have a very efficient way to get rid of their extra body heat. Luckily, elephants come with a built-in solution: big, floppy ears. On the inside of an elephant's ears, you will find a web of tiny blood vessels. The skin of the ear is very thin, and the blood vessels are very close to the surface. When the temperature of the elephant's blood is greater than the temperature of his surroundings, heat is released from the ears. The same thing happens when you hold an ice cube in the palm of your hand. Heat flows from an area of high heat to an area of low heat.

While you may be tempted to say, “This ice cube is making my hand cold" in reality, the heat from your hand is actually making the ice cube warmer. Heat-releasing blood vessels aren't the only useful function of an elephant's ears. They also act like giant fans. As elephants flap their ears back and forth, they create a light breeze that can speed up the cooling process. It is a bit like stepping out of a cool shower and standing in front of a fan. An elephant's ears can cool its body by up to 5° Celcius (that's 9° Farenheit)! An African elephant's ears can grow to be six feet long and four feet wide.

Asian elephants tend to live in shady forests and don't have to endure the same extreme temperatures as their African cousins. As a result, Asian elephants have smaller ears than African elephants. On hot days, you may even see elephants rolling around in mud, taking a dip in a pond, or using their trunks like hoses to spray down their bodies. The heat then leaves their bodies by flowing into the cooler mud or water..

It ' s truly simple to place together, however it ' s also tamper-proof. And now clearly I ' ve got the lens in position, kind of, I have a couple of spots where it usually sits.So I assume we actually wouldn ' t have to eliminate any of the back of his paw. Well it ' s going well currently I ' ve got my holes in I could possibly do one more one however it really looks sensibly stiff once it ' s in fact set up yet you can see, the placement is great. I'' m sure we ' ll do a lot better next year. Let ' s take an appearance at the line; See just how that breaks out as well as see just how I can perhaps include that right into Bjorn, due to the fact that undoubtedly he ' s the bar, he needs to keep that somehow. We demand to make sure we can obtain all the pipes via him, around him, whatever. An Elephant With a Cracked Toenail | Secrets of the Zoo

Artie cracked a toenail. It can be very dangerous if we let this go. So a good goal for today is file down the nail. Foot. Artie's going through musth right now. He's got a lot of testosterone. He might not want to do this. Foot. Where's your foot going? Good boy. All right, so it looks like he's got some bits that need to come off. I want to make sure the actual toenail itself is nice and smooth around here.

And I'm also taking out some of this dead tissue that can dry up and cause some issues. I'm trying to open that up enough so that there aren't any pockets where debris can get trapped, and then you can get that infection starting to fester. This procedure might look painful, but it's actually just like us filing down our nails. And so, because those nails grow down rather than out, we want to make sure that when they walk around they're actually walking on the pad of their foot. The pad acts like our sneakers do, so that if they step on rocks, or anything like that, they can't feel it. As this tissue continues to grow out, we'll need to keep trimming on it. His nail grows really quick. We're opening two. Hopefully, this is all going to work out, and he'll be back to full-speed Artie soon. Yeah, that'd be great. Our job is just to keep it clean. Good boy, Bubba. You are the gentlest of giants. Artie did a great job.

pexels-photo-4003655.jpeg?auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb&h=650&w=940

We're going to keep an eye on him, to make sure that we don't see any issues. Artie, come. And hopefully we'll get this all figured out. Bubba-boy boy. You did so good. Yes, you are brave, brave elephant. This is definitely a mani/pedi day, a nice spa day for Artie. The only thing that's missing are mimosas.
