What have we done? Oh, what have we done? Oh my gosh. Okay, so today we're in Cape Town and we wanted to try the Gatsby. This is a dish that apparently originated in the Cape Flats. It is fast food so we thought hey let's order two half portions and then this behemoth of a meal arrived and I'm not entirely sure how we're going to eat all of this. I don't think we can accurately portray just how big this is. It is huge. Put your hand out. My hands. Tada. Like this thing is enormous. It is like bigger than my head. This is the half portion. This is way bigger than your head. Imagine if we had gotten the full one.
Like the bread would be out to here. Like, this is to feed a family. It is enough food to feed a group of friends and we're going to eat all of this. Just the two of us. Arggh! Okay, so it is time introduce you to the Gatsby. Time to tuck into it but first basically it is just if you can imagine it is a massive submarine sandwich. Yeah. You can see it is shaped like a submarine.
If we actually went like that you can see that is probably what a large one looks like. Yes, that would be one large basically. Maybe one large one. And anyways yeah. Let's take a look and see what is inside. So it is filled with chips. That is the key ingredient. Every Gatsby has chips. Woah, look at how many chips there are. And then the one that I got here is the Steak Masala so you can see there is a big generous chunk of steak. Big hunk of steak. I noticed some lettuce at the bottom. There is a bit of salad in there as well. Yeah, there is a little bit of salad but is obviously at the very very bottom. You can barely see it. Yeah, and we noticed on the menu they had a whole bunch of fillings. You can get it with hotdog, sausage, eggs. They had one with curry as well too. So many options. You can get anything you want really. Alright, so let's actually go in for the first bite.
Actually they just told us we're supposed to be eating this with our hands. Okay. No cutlery allowed. Alright. So good luck. Alright, good luck with that. Woah. This is just like oh my gosh I can't even hold it. Oh my gosh. Hahaha. Woah! Mmmm. That is so so so good. Mmmm. And also you got your chips coated in barbecue sauce? You know what? I got mine, I think there is barbecue and maybe like a bit of piri piri. That is like really spicy so you really taste the chips, you taste the steak and then of course there is not a lot of salad in there. I have to say. I do think there is some onions but my gosh. You know what this is like hangover food. This is the ultimate hangover food when you have a you feel you're a lot more hungry than you actually are. And not only that I kind of feel like this is the type of food that what was probably created by a ten year old. Mom, mom let's make a giant sandwich let's throw in some french fries, let's throw in some steak.
Alright, one more bite. Let's see if you can get a bit of everything, some chips, some salad and some steak. Mmmm. My gosh that is good. The Gatsby. The Gatsby for the win. Alright, so I'm already getting full eating Sam's chips. I haven't even touched mine. So let's have a look. I ordered the one with chips and cheese. Oh look at that and tomato sauce and piri piri spice on the chips and it also has salad. Wow. So yeah. Oh my gosh. My goal is to try and finish at least one piece. It is so big it is hard to even pick up. Look at that.
Okay, let's first zoom into that. Tada. Haha. I mean look at that. Time for the first bite. That is insane. That is just so big. So so big. Mmmmm. Isn't it good? Yours must be spicy? It is good. Well the tomato sauce is sweet so it balances out but seriously this is like carb overload. Bread and potatoes. Yeah, there is no way we each needed our own half one. We could have shared a half. We will try our best. Had we known. Had we known. We'll try our best to finish it. My gosh. I don't even want to know how many calories are in that thing. So Sam is going to try mine. The chips and cheese. The great Gatsby. The great Gatsby. Mmmm. What do you think? I really like that.
Yeah? To be honest I prefer mine a bit more because you get the steak with it but this is still good. You're right like the tomato sauce does balance it out and it is just so big. Like it is such a big bite that you can my jaw is actually hurting trying to open large enough enough you know just to take a bite. That is how big it is. That is how thick the Gatsby is here in South Africa. I'm trying Sam's now. And I mean Sam has taken maybe like two bites out of this and barely put a dent in it.
I simply flattened it though. It looks like I sat on it. Haha. Isn't that wonderful? Mmmm. The steak huh? It has caramelized onions as well. I know. Yours is really spicy. I know. I think I like yours better too. It is really good. So if you're coming here get this one. Get the one with the steak and the fries. Steak masala. Steak masala for the win. And to wash this all down I'm having Stoney Ginger Beer which is basically my beverage of choice here in South Africa. Mmm. It has got like such a strong ginger taste. It has like a lot of bite and it is much stronger than ginger ale if that is what you're used to so if you have a chance to try the ginger beer. This doesn't have alcohol by the way. It is just the name of it. It is just the Ginger Beer soda. So I think it is fair to say we were defeated by the Gatsby. We weren't just defeated.
We were annihilated by the Gatsby. Like I'm so full I'm almost involuntarily belching right now. So, and look at how much is left. I know. We ate half of each. Yeah. Which would be a quarter of a portion of each sandwich. Oh my gosh. Just literally destroyed by this. But anyways in terms of price point it was a 155 Rand which at current exchange is only $11 US dollars and that was for both of them.
Yeah, and like we said that is enough food to feed a family or a group of friends. So our biggest tip is to come with a buddy and just get a half of one and go from there. I mean if you can eat a second one I'm very impressed. Yeah. And we tried this at Mariams Kitchen. We sure did. Tata..
