Smithsonian Zoo Attempting To Breed Asian Elephants

CAR HIT THE GAS PEDAL AND THE ENGINE OVERHEATED. THE MAN WAS TAKEN TO A HOSPITAL TO BE EVALUATED. ASIAN ELEPHANTS HAVE LED TO MONKEY BUSINESS AT THE SMITHSONIAN. THERE TRIED TO BREED ELEPHANTS UNDER HUMAN CARE FEWER THAN 50,000 ARE LEFT IN THE WILD. CHIP REED INTRODUCES US TO SPIKE, A 36-YEAR-OLD SEVEN TODD CASANOVA AND HIS PARAMORE, RONNIE. Reporter: SPIKE, RECENTLY MOVED TO WASHINGTON FROM FLORIDA. WE WERE THERE AS HE WAS RELEASED FROM QUARANTINE, SO THAT HE COULD MEET THREE FEMALES HE HAD BEEN ADMIRING FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE. THERE WAS SOME TRUMPETING. AND SOME AIR FLAPPING, ANOTHER SIGN OF HAPPINESS. WITH ONE, RONNIE, THERE WAS SOME CANOODLING. THEY ARE HITTING IT OFF. THEY DO APPEAR TO BE HITTING IT OFF. I AM NO EXPERT IN ELEPHANT LOVE. Reporter: IN FACT, THIS IS NOT THEIR FIRST MEETING. AS THEY SAY, ELEPHANTS NEVER FORGET SPIKE AND RONNIE WERE AN ITEM IN CANADA IN 2014. RONNIE GOT PREGNANT THREE TIMES, BUT SADLY NONE OF THE BABIES LIVED PAST INFANCY.

NOW, THE NATIONAL ZOO HOPE THEY WILL HAVE BETTER LUCK. IT IS GOING EXCELLENT. WE COULD NOT BE HAPPIER. THEY HAVE A GREAT SOCIAL HISTORY. Reporter: IT IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY HOPED FOR. WE BROUGHT SPIKE HERE HOPING THEY WOULD BREED AND PRODUCE OFFSPRING. THE FIRST STEP WE CAN CHECK OFF. THEY HAVE READ AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO. WE WILL TEST IN A FEW MONTHS TO SEE IF SHE IS PREGNANT..
