What is the mighty African Elephant really afraid of?

When the elephants arrive at the waterhole everyone gives way. Even young elephant calves act tough and chase away antelope like kudu. Entire herds of sable wait or try very cautiously to get a drink. Yes, the elephant, large and small is definitely the ‘playground’ bully. Did you know? Did you know that the elephant can be kept away by a tiny little fella.

Or better said, a host of these yellow and black striped flyers. Yes, elephants, entire herds of elephants can be kept away from enticing crops by bees. Bees have proven to be the peacemakers between farmers and elephants. In northern Tanzania Moses Ryakitimbo works tirelessly. Elephants used to trample the crops of the Lendoiya village farmers. Mr. Nanyaro "I have 10 beehives in my farm...since then I have never even seen elephant dung around...this means elephants don't come here anymore...this gives me a feeling that elephants are good mammals because they don't disturb my maize farm anymore." Elder Wella "It's now almost one year I don't see the one TUSKED ELEPHANT. We plant, we harvest and we eat what we planted in the soil. Beehives are just a blessing." Mr. Emanuel "I am new to the project, but very happy to be part of this major accomplishment seeing elephants stepping out of my farm in a peaceful manner.
