She made history as the first black woman to hold that title after a media Scandal involving her explicit pictures in Penthouse Magazine caused her to resign her title in 1984 she went on to have a fruitful career as a singer and actor earning herself multiple Grammy and Tony Award nominations in a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame the CEO of Miss America did publicly apologize to her for the event of 1984 during the 2016 pageant and later on in the video we are going to go deeper into this Scandal but you guys know I like to start off with beauty secrets favorite food regimen and childhood and all of that stuff before we get into all of the juicy details as far as our favorite colors Peach is one of Vanessa's favorite colors her favorite food is a lobster pasta at a restaurant called salt and Marina Del Rey she was raving about it to People magazine and as far as her beauty goes Vanessa has always been open about the treatments she received at her doctor's office even posting a video on her Instagram receiving a Botox treatment she told no Beauty my main focus is on skin tightening and collagen boosting I found that a combination of micro current therapy and Botox has been most effective for me when Allure asks Vanessa's daughter Jillian and Melanie about the advice their mom has given them Jillian responded wear sunscreen Williams also told WebMD that it was the one habit she wishes she would have started sooner I grew up in the 70s so was baby oil and reflectors I probably wouldn't have the majority of the wrinkles I have now if I had paid attention to that she told us magazine that my her biggest regret is supposed to bear as a teenager and we're going to get into that also and also my worst personality trait is being impatient I want what I want when I want it which is now I don't have a guilty pleasure I regret no dessert cigar or cocktail life is worth living in everything in moderation so now let's get into her childhood so Vanessa Lynn Williams was born in Tarrytown New York on March 18 1963.
Interestingly her parents put here she is Miss America on her birth announcement that they sent out to friends 20 years earlier can you guys believe the coincidence in that I remember my grandparents used to always say well my grandmother used to always say what's your name your child is very important and what you speak over your child when they're young is very important because she gave all of her kids like Christian biblical names or meaningful names and my father named my sister and myself all of our names just have meaning to it so her parents but here she is Miss America on her birth announcement and she turned out to be Miss America and this was a time when there was no black African Miss America so they already spoke that into her life how powerful so William a Fields an African-American legislator in the Tennessee House of Representatives was Vanessa's paternal great-grandfather Vanessa Williams is also descended from English Welsh Irish Finnish Italian and Portuguese ancestors her mother Helen tinge met her father Milton Augustine Williams Jr in the late 1950s while both were music education students at Fredonia State Teachers College they both became elementary school music teachers after their marriage though in different districts Milton also worked as an assistant principal at his school for a long time William's father is Catholic and she was raised in that Faith her mother was raised at Baptist but she changed her religion to Catholic when she got married Williams went to the Bronx Church of Our Lady of Grace to be Kristen Williams used to help her mother turn the pages of sheet music while played to Oregon at Saint Teresa's Church in Briarcliff Manor for weddings and mass Williams and her younger brother Chris grew up in the affluent white suburb of Westchester County New York Williams speculates that she may have been the first black student to complete all 12 grades in the Chappaqua I hope I pronounce that right Central School District her children later went to the same school Robert E Bell Middle School which she had attended and William stated that her children still had Mr and Mrs Fink who were her teachers for shop and home economics classes this part is a little sad so trigger warning trigger warning trigger warning saying in advance it is talking about touching at an inappropriate age okay so the former Miss America explained on Oprah's Master Class that being inappropriately touched by a family friend when she was younger made her more sensually promiscuous and more Curious at a younger age than she should have been Vanessa's first trip to California with family was the summer before fifth grade during her stay she was introduced to the 18 year old daughter of a family friend the girl she said made you feel like a grown-up so she was one of the cool girls end quote the admiration that Williams initially felt for the girl change when she entered her room Williams said she told me to lie down on the floor she yanked my underwear off told me to be quiet and then laid on top of me not knowing what it was I was nonetheless aware that it felt good and that I shouldn't be saying anything even though it was a pleasant experience I knew it shouldn't be happening Williams continued to feel torn about what had happened that night Williams considered telling her parents about what had happened on the trip however after a death in the family she claimed she buried the memory because everyone was already too preoccupied with the drama of losing a loved one so she said at the young age having that happen to you in your body it awakens your sensuality at an age that it shouldn't be awakened I think that had that not happened in my life and I had an opportunity to have a normal courtship with a boyfriend at 16 or whatever and have normal first kiss you know where there wouldn't have been that shamed I was kind of always haunting me end quote William's the daughter of two musicians was raised in a musical environment where she had the opportunity to learn many instruments and styles of dance she was accepted to Carnegie Mellon University and offered the presidential scholarship for drama but she turned it down in favor of a different scholarship offer from Syracuse University to study musical theater Williams enrolled at Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts in 1981.
She completed her second year at Syracuse before being crowned Miss America 1984 and September 1983. Williams graduated with a BFA from Syracuse in May of 2008 Williams earned the remaining credits for her degree through industry experience and her substantial performance on stage and Screen she reported by Syracuse news so now let's get into the Miss America Scandal when she was crowned Miss America in 1984 September 1983. Williams became the first African-American to hold the title William took a semester off school after she was promised America so that she could focus on her new responsibilities having been the first black woman to win Miss America she caused quite a stir Williams received death threats and hate knows from white people who didn't weren't too happy but she was also criticized by members of the black community who questioned whether her green eyes and fair skin made her black enough regardless of the debates Williams will go down in history as one of the most well-liked contestants in Miss America's competition history her Charisma intelligence and oratory skills won over not only the existing pageant audience but also an entirely new demographic the major media Outlets couldn't get enough of Miss Williams and they ran stories about her almost every day cultural critics and observers agree that she was instrumental in the pageant's recent Revival as she helped dispel the impression that it was stuck in the past however Williams decided not to complete her year as Miss America she resigned after 10 months in office after lewd photos of her and another young woman and nude you know girl on girl action poses were published in Penthouse and I must say they were explicit who they were explicit they were very very explicit but I think in today's time we're more lenient but unfortunately for Vanessa Williams it was an ERA where it was very conservative and it created a lot of discussion I do want to know you guys thoughts on that Williams was given three days to return her title by pageant organizers and on July 24 1984 three days after her announcement she held a press conference in which she broke down in tears and resigned as Miss America she went on to find success elsewhere once she did relinquish her title so it probably was one of the best things to have happen to her career-wise you know it's bittersweet she released her debut single the right stuff in January 1988 which topped the US dance chart and made it to number 44 on a singles chart and I just want to say for the youngest who didn't know Miss Vanessa has a voice on her okay she was a singer and people don't associate her with singing as much as they should but she had a lot of success in the music industry and she wasn't just one of those people that dabbled into the thing you can just see she actually could sing and had real hits so we're going to give her credit as a singer also she released her debut album of the same name which reached number 38 on the billboard 200 and has sold over 500 000 copies Vanessa was back in 1991 with her second album The Comfort Zone and the lead single running back to you which I love also which stopped the r b chart number two on a dance chart in reach number 18 on a singles chart the comfort zone was released in August 1991 and would be a much bigger success than her debut selling to date over 1.7 million copies Stateside and over 4 million globally forefather singles were lifted from the album which included the track just for tonight and work to do but it would be her ballad Save The Best For Last which I think was her biggest song uh the most popular song I sell my favorite song from her also which was the third single to be listed from the album Now catapult Vanessa to the top of the US single star for five weeks in January 1992 becoming the fourth biggest seller of the year the song which remains her signature tune also topped the singles chart in Canada and Australia and made the top 10 across the rest of the globe including a number three placing in the UK and Japan so she had another album called the sweetest days that was certified platinum for sales of over 1 million copies and yielded two further hits with the way that you love and you can't run and in 1995 she was commissioned to perform the theme from Disney's latest film Pocahontas you guys didn't know that the song Colors of the Wind oh my goodness I love that song it was a huge success okay it was Disney making number four on the U.S singles chart number to an adult contemporary chart it has sold over 700 000 copies Stateside to date the song gave Vanessa only her second UK chart injury thus far when it picked out number 21 there after release 2004's silver and gold in 2005's Everlasting Love she was cast as a deliciously evil Willamina Slater the following year a world that would keep her busy for the next four years on ugly Berry which I know many of you guys know her from that show and Williams quickly moved on to starring Desperate Housewives which I love her in Desperate Housewives I was so excited to see her join the show a show that kept her busy for the next three seasons after the show ended and these days all we get to see are Vanessa Williams is a mix of TV guest spots in the odd film she did play in several other films family friendly films also she gets her coins and she does a lot of theater work she she rehearses a lot for theater she's really big on theater Williams has had three marriages in 1987 she married Ramon Harvey II at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church gave birth to her first child just a few years after relinquishing her Miss America Title Harvey was a public relations specialist hired to resurrect her career after she resigned and they ended up divorcing in 1997 after having three children Melanie Jillian and Devin and in 1999 she married NBA basketball player Rick Fox and Rick Fox is so handsome honey okay they divorced in 2004 and had one daughter Sasha Gabriella Fox after receiving a church annulment from her first marriage she married Jim scripp a businessman from Buffalo New York in 2015 in regards to her failed marriages she did an interview with glamor magazine which I found so wholesome where she gave advice I actually agreed with and found very well articulated so I'ma summarize some of her points below she stated what you expect from Marriage I believe begins with how you were raised it serves as a template for how you behave what your comfort level is and what you're willing to tolerate my parents married in 1960 but they took a very modern approach to their marriage my mother has always been extremely self-sufficient and my father never gave her ultimatums she was free to be herself my relationship expectations were shaped by what I learned from them to be clear I've been married three times and each of my husbands has been a good man if they weren't decent people I wouldn't have married them however I believe that men go through different stages of their lives be very clear about who you're marrying before you get married in my first marriage I was always struggling my professional and personal lives as a wife and mother that means you must be self-sufficient and make decisions even though I was the primary earner the kids schedules came first and my career came second unfortunately this meant that the marriage came in third place when I went to promote albums my husband accompanied me as my manager which was a good thing there is no such thing as equilibrium you feel guilty when you're working hard you hope your partner understands that children must always come first when a baby is crying you must attend to it you simply will not be 100 available in the marriage the relationship will change I believe that Women Marry expectations because they see women's reality but believe they can change it and I believe that men marry who the woman is at the time because they don't believe she will ever change and are unable to cope when she does my previous marriage lasted 10 years we had some infidelity issues I hung in there for a while until I couldn't anymore my second husband was six years younger than I was I was 36 When we married I was was worried about being too old at the time despite the fact that I was still very young he was in the MBA which essentially another form of show business but it was high profile in a way I hadn't seen before we had different problems than in my first marriage given our professions proximity was a huge barrier so we had that on top of the age issue but because of my father my expectations of a relationship were extremely high he was amazing at everything he could fix a car do electrical work build anything and he was a problem solver he was also devoted had impeccable character and was well liked in his community my father exemplified what I was looking for in a partner and no one could possibly live up to that now that I'm on my third marriage I've realized it's key to not expect one person to be able to fulfill every need in their life I've got my friend who I go to the theater with the friend I want to play tennis with it puts tremendous pressure on your mate to have to fulfill every desire you've ever had another piece of wisdom you have to hear people and I'm not talking about the this is what I did today kind of listening when you consciously or subconsciously shut someone down constantly correct or always try to be right those are relationship Killers the other person feels like they're not being heard that leads to resentment and then feeling cut off from each other once emotional distance is established it can be hard to bridge it takes more than apologies to rebuild that connection to get back to what brought you together in the first place the other piece of advice I have before you get married be really clear about who it is you're marrying make sure you listen loud and clear because chances are what bugs you a little bit now is going to be completely Amplified after a few years as far as Charity worksheet Williams is involved with a number of humanitarian causes she is a supporter of LGBT rights and same-sex marriage and in 2011 participated in the Human Rights Campaign New Yorkers for marriage equality she has partnered with dress for success an organization that provides professional attire for low-income women seeking employment Williams is also involved with the San Miguel Academy of Newburgh a school for boys at risk this is all I have for this video she deserves a flower she's been in the industry for so long she has accomplished so much and had so many firsts and she deserves a lot more recognition and flowers and I think unfortunately that Scandal did taint her Legacy as far as opportunities but it also catapulted her career as well and I feel right now is the age of redemption in terms of things that were done in the past where people were wronged people are now a little bit more open-minded to forgiving those things and letting it go and not being so critical and harsh comment below your thoughts I love you guys so much thank you for tuning in if you like the music you're listening to support my brother the link is in the description also comment below who else would you guys like to see like comment subscribe until next time foreign
