What is the mighty African Elephant really afraid of?

When the elephants arrive at the waterhole everyone gives way. Even young elephant calves act tough and chase away antelope like kudu. Entire herds of sable wait or try very cautiously to get a drink. Yes, the elephant, large and small is definitely the ‘playground’ bully. Did you know? Did you know that the elephant can be kept away by a tiny little fella.

Or better said, a host of these yellow and black striped flyers. Yes, elephants, entire herds of elephants can be kept away from enticing crops by bees. Bees have proven to be the peacemakers between farmers and elephants. In northern Tanzania Moses Ryakitimbo works tirelessly. Elephants used to trample the crops of the Lendoiya village farmers. Today, most of the maize fields are protected by 100 beehives. Here’s what the grateful farmers have to say. Mr. Elidaima Wella "We actually didn't believe that bees could make such a big difference chasing away almost 50+ elephants and bringing the number down to zero. We now harvest our food crops in large amounts and live in harmony with elephants." Mr. Baraka "Nikela has been a blessing to our village here in Lendoiya. I have witnessed a peaceful coexistence between man and this big Mammal called "elephant"." "Staying in peace with elephants and bees helping out the process. It's a miracle." Mr. Frank "Nikela is the best for African wildlife." Elder Balozi "At my old age, I thank God to have seen this miracle of bees protecting our farm's from elephants.

We now don't have elephants disturbing us in the night time, we just hear them in other neighboring villages." Mr. Nanyaro "I have 10 beehives in my farm...since then I have never even seen elephant dung around...this means elephants don't come here anymore...this gives me a feeling that elephants are good mammals because they don't disturb my maize farm anymore." Elder Wella "It's now almost one year I don't see the one TUSKED ELEPHANT. We plant, we harvest and we eat what we planted in the soil. Beehives are just a blessing." Mr. Emanuel "I am new to the project, but very happy to be part of this major accomplishment seeing elephants stepping out of my farm in a peaceful manner.

Thanks to Nikela for supporting us with beehives that keep our crops safe and at the same time protect the ELEPHANTS from the human wildlife conflict. However, Moses’ work is not yet done. Another 64 beehives are needed These 64 beehives will then protect the entire village of Lendoiya. This includes 18 beehives for two adjoining women farmers. Tumaini Nanyaro Esther Nnko - with hood. On April 3rd 2020 elephants destroyed all that they had planted. In October they planted beans. But the elephants came calling again.

Fortunately not all was destroyed and they could harvest some in December. But, elephants remember. They will be back. This time with your help the bees will be waiting. With your help the rest of the village of Lendoiya will protected. With your help elephants won’t be speared, crops won’t be trampled and families will have food to eat. It’s really simple. All you do is sponsor a beehive (or more than one if you like) Get your name or the name of someone you care about on a beehive today. Your kindness protects crops and saves elephants a real win-win situation. 100% of your gift goes to buy the lumber and supplies, transport the materials, construct the beehive, paint and label the beehive, transport the beehive and the workers to the field, and install the beehive.
